Samsung has stepped into the world of generative AI with the launch of its AI system, Gauss. The announcement, made at the Samsung AI Forum, introduces Gauss as a direct contender to OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Gauss, named after mathematician Carl Friedrich Gauss, symbolizes the escalating interest in AI among device manufacturers, notably in smartphones and computers.

Hosted annually since 2017 by Samsung Research and the Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology, the Samsung AI Forum in Seoul served as the platform for this significant reveal. Gauss is a product of Samsung Research and is already enhancing productivity within the company. Plans are in place to integrate its capabilities into various Samsung products.

The Samsung Gauss model comprises three core components: Samsung Gauss Language, Samsung Gauss Code, and Samsung Gauss Image. The Language component is a generative language model designed to boost work efficiency through assistance in email writing, document summarization, and translation. It promises to improve consumer experiences by enabling smarter device control, adaptable for both cloud-based and on-device applications.

The Code component, named “code,” acts as a coding assistant, streamlining software development processes through interactive interfaces that assist in code description and test case generation. The Image component is geared towards generating and editing images, allowing users to make style changes, add elements, and enhance image resolutions.

A key aspect of Gauss is its on-device capability, highlighting Samsung’s commitment to consumer privacy. The company addresses safety concerns with its AI Red Team, which scrutinizes security and privacy issues throughout the AI implementation process. The introduction of Samsung Gauss signifies Samsung’s ambitious stride in AI innovation, balancing technological advancement with a strong emphasis on privacy and security.
